This article is not meant to be a review of Darktable, but rather a tool to help you decide if this program is right for you. Proceed with cautionĪt this point, you might be ready to cancel all your editing software subscriptions and jump on the Darktable bandwagon.īut before you take the leap, I need to offer a few words of caution. There is also no mobile support, meaning photographers who rely on tablets or phones as essential components of their editing workflow will be left out in the cold. Drawing a mask, moving a slider, or even cropping an image often involves precious seconds of wait time, which can really add up when going through hundreds of images. Performing many of the editing maneuvers is an exercise in patience, even on a newer computer. You can create masks of all shapes and sizes in Darktable, which are useful for applying edits in specific image locations.Īgain, I need to temper expectations. For frugal photographers, it would be difficult not to recommend Darktable, and for everyone else, it just helps to have some patience. I am still kind of amazed that all these features are in a free program that continues to be actively developed. While speed is important, it’s not everything, and many quibbles with Darktable are mitigated by its price.Īfter all, despite my issues with Darktable’s user interface and lack of polish, it’s impossible to overlook the cost. That’s not necessarily the only peg to hang your editing hat on, though. The latter will get the job done, but the former will do it way faster. Not that Lightroom and Capture One are speed demons – but comparing them to Darktable is like comparing a Ferrari to a Toyota Corolla. Scrolling through images, selecting pictures, editing metadata information, and other simple operations take far longer than other programs. My biggest issue with Darktable is evident just from using the Lighttable module: overall responsiveness is not great. While things seem great up to this point, I do need to temper your expectations a bit. You can customize many different elements of the export process.

The place: A mansion on Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, 5 a.m. Lloyd Webber borrowed several of the tunes from his 1986 mini-musical Cricket, written with Tim Rice, which had been performed at Windsor Castle and later at the 1986 Sydmonton Festival. A revised version, written by Black and Christopher Hampton had a complete performance at the 1992 Sydmonton Festival, now with Patti LuPone playing Norma, and Kevin Anderson as Joe Gillis, again. While a complete story, it was still in the experimental stage and not ready for potential producers. This original version starred Ria Jones as Norma, and Michael Ball as Joe Gillis, directed by Andrew MacBean. Don Black was later brought in to work with Powers the two wrote the version that was performed in 1991 at Lloyd Webber's Sydmonton Festival. In 1991, Lloyd Webber asked Amy Powers, a lawyer from New York who co-wrote the lyrics for the musical Cinderella: A Musical, to write the lyrics for Sunset Boulevard. At that point, Lloyd Webber "felt it was the subject had to compose next", though by February 1990 he had announced plans to turn Really Useful Group private so he could "make movies rather than musicals." In 1976, after a conversation with Hal Prince, who had the theatrical rights to Sunset, Lloyd Webber wrote "an idea for the moment when Norma Desmond returns to Paramount Studios" Lloyd Webber did no further work on the play until after 1989's Aspects of Love. When Lloyd Webber saw the film in the early 1970s, he was inspired to write what he pictured as the title song for a theatrical adaptation, fragments of which he instead incorporated into Gumshoe. A few years later, when he was invited by Hal Prince to write the score for a film remake starring Angela Lansbury as a fading musical comedian rather than a silent film star, Sondheim declined, citing his conversation with Wilder. After all, it's about a dethroned queen". "You can't write a musical about Sunset Boulevard," Wilder responded, "it has to be an opera. A chance encounter with Billy Wilder at a cocktail party gave Sondheim the opportunity to introduce himself and ask the original film's co-screenwriter and director his opinion of the project (which was to star Jeanette MacDonald). In the early 1960s, Stephen Sondheim outlined a musical stage adaptation and went so far as to compose the first scene with librettist Burt Shevelove. A recording of the entire score, which had been housed in the Gloria Swanson archives at the University of Texas, was released on CD in 2008. On 20 February 1957, Paramount executive Russell Holman wrote to Swanson asking her to cease work on the project because "it would be damaging for the property to be offered to the entertainment public in another form as a stage musical." In 1994, Hughes incorporated material from the production into Swanson on Sunset, based on his and Stapley's experiences in writing Boulevard!. Rights holder Paramount Pictures originally had given Swanson verbal permission to proceed with the musical, but there had been no formal legal arrangement. However, it has been the subject of several legal battles and ultimately lost money due to its extraordinary running costs.įrom approximately 1952 to 1956, Gloria Swanson worked with actor Richard Stapley (aka Richard Wyler) and cabaret singer and pianist Dickson Hughes on a musical adaptation originally entitled Starring Norma Desmond, then Boulevard! It ended on a happier note than the film, with Norma allowing Joe to leave and pursue a happy ending with Betty. Opening first in London in 1993, the musical has had several long runs internationally and enjoyed extensive tours. When young screenwriter Joe Gillis accidentally crosses her path, she sees in him an opportunity to make her return to the big screen, with romance and tragedy to follow. The plot revolves around Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, living in the past in her decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street. It is based on the 1950 film of the same title. Sunset Boulevard is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and lyrics and book by Don Black and Christopher Hampton. The 2020s has brought on another wave of Nicktoons based on other things: a reboot of Rugrats, two spinoffs of SpongeBob SquarePants, and Nicktoon adaptations of preexisting properties like Star Trek, Big Nate, Monster High, and Transformers. This could best be seen when Nickelodeon left the second and third DreamWorks shows out of their otherwise-complete " 2010s in review " retrospective, which showed all of (and only) their originally-produced shows from the 2010s. As a result, Nick doesn't recognize the DreamWorks trio as part of the Nicktoons brand. While they were made by Nick Animation Studio and Paramount Global (the successor to Viacom) owns half of the copyright, DreamWorks stopped licensing their characters to Nick in 2016. Unlike the two above, these shows' status as part of the Nicktoons canon is in a gray area. Nickelodeon Animation Studio double-dipped and produced new "Nickified" versions of both shows (with some of the original creators onboard!).Īnother exception came about when Nick partnered with DreamWorks Animation to produce three spin-off shows based on DW's animated movies. That all changed when Nick's then-parent company, the almighty Viacom, bought two kids' TV franchises at the turn of the New '10s decade: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Winx Club. In other words, these Nicktoons came straight from the minds of Nick’s own artists. note The iffy Dream Works shows are explained below. Ever since, the Nicktoons have remained one of the most popular aspects of Nickelodeon. The first three Nicktoons premiered on August 11, 1991, essentially reinvigorating the market for creator-driven, original animated series that had all but died out in the wave of Merchandise-Driven Saturday Morning Cartoons that defined Western children's programming during The '80s. The 10 of Cups is the only card in the Rider Waite deck with a rainbow. What is The Meaning of The Rainbow in The 10 of Cups? Both cards refer to a spiritual awakening, but where the solitary Hermit represents a personal awakening, Judgement indicates a cosmic awakening shared with other people or humanity as a whole. In contrast, the solitary figure at the center of the Nine of Cups, who is also happy, is experiencing that happiness in a more personal or private way.Ĭompare also Judgement card and The Hermit. You are not experiencing your happiness alone, but others around you are also sharing those ‘good feelings’. Tarot cards which depict a family, signify that the central message of the card is meant to be a ‘shared’ experience. What is The Meaning of The Family in This Card? Millions long for immortality who do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy afternoon. The land of eternal happiness and immortality. In fact, life looks so perfect in this card, it could be Heaven. The Ten of Cups reflects ‘completion’ of happiness. Adopted in Tarot, this symbolism had much to do with and was taken from the ten Sephiroth of both Kabbalah and Qabalah, along with astrology and I Ching or Yi Jing, an ancient Chinese system of cosmology and philosophy. The number ten has become a symbol for having a full set of something, like we have ten fingers and ten toes. The Tens of Wands and Swords, the more masculine suits, are depicted more aggressively than the Cups and Pentacles. They reflect the way we encounter, respond to and cope with completions and outcomes. In Tarot, the ten cards depict the extremes of life. It incorporates robotics and technology with collaborative STEAM activities in a way that students of all ages and levels can immediately jump into. Personally, I'd love to try creating art with the SPRK+ Robot by sloshing it in paint and coding a design! ( I did say it was for all ages!) After trying it out, and listening to his ideas, it is clear how well suited the technology is for classroom settings. Later on when my 12 year old experimented with SPRK+, he was easily able to start coding with the BLOCKS program on the Sphero Edu app.īoth my boys have already started eagerly discussing the experiments they want to try with the SPRK+ Robot, especially my younger son who watched the video with me ( see the video for yourself, below!) and really wants to make a SPRK+ powered boat. He also loved changing the colors of SPRK+! I love that a tech project got him thinking about patterns of colors. As a parent, it was great to see his mind working hard as he strived to get the code just right. By using his math skills, he was about to work out the difficulties. It requires trial and error to get the measurements right, and this is where the grid on the app and the measurements on the maze tape really came in handy. But it's actually not as easy as it sounds. You can see in the photo above, the you simply use your finger to draw a path. My 8 year old and I decided to start out with DRAW, since we were total newbies. Advanced students can use JavaScript to write text programs. Intermediates can use BLOCKS, a block-based drag and drop interface. Beginners can use DRAW to draw paths that represent code for their robot to follow. The app offers three different ways to code so students of all ages and skill levels can participate. However, he quickly decided it would be even more fun put blocks inside the maze as additional foils for the robot! And, of course, once he got going he realized getting SPRK+ to ram into the blocks was even more fun. We used the maze tape in our SPRK+ kit, conveniently marked with centimeters, to create a short pathway with turns and my son added in some blocks alongside the path. It is perfect for collaborative educational projects but we tried it out in our living room.Īfter downloading the Sphero Edu app and charging up the SPRK+ Robot, my 8 year old and I decided our first experiment would be coding SPRK+ to navigate a maze. The Sphero Edu app and SPRK+Robot are classroom ready and designed to be used by students of all ages. It is even waterproof and shatterproof so kids can really go to town with their experiments. The Sphero Edu program uses the SPRK+ Robot, which is an app-enabled robotic sphere, equipped with Bluetooth SMART. Science, Technology, Engineering, Art+Design, and Math. They go beyond code while they build, engineer, and even create art! The Sphero Edu program is an exciting way to learn because it emphasizes every letter in STEAM. In other words, kids don't just stare at a screen to learn code. The Sphero Edu program allows kids to experiment with coding, robotics and technology with hands-on activities. So I was delighted to give my boys the opportunity to experiment at home with the SPRK+ Robot and Sphero Edu app. STEAM education emphasizes the integration of technology with science, math, engineering, as well as art + design, so kids never rely on the screen as the primary tool for learning.īe sure to read all the way to the end for your chance to win a SPRK+ Robot of your own! Sometimes it is a hard line to navigate but the key is that we focus on STEAM activities. Since my sons have such strict screen time limits ( for my own sanity and theirs) I sometimes worry that they are missing out on educational opportunities that would help them learn real life skills like coding necessary for computer science. Every city produces some sort of commodity, be it grain, fruit, metal or many more items. Here you need to focus on your city’s prosperity by trading goods from one city to another. The bulk of your time with Port Royale 4 will revolve around its trading mechanics. You’ll have a Viceroy who will send you objectives every so often, guiding you, and if you fulfil these you’re rewarded with bonuses and skill points that can be used in different ways. Regardless of which mode you play, they all begin the same, with you in your hometown free to start sailing and trading wherever you wish in the hopes of supreme wealth and prosperity. While the Campaign has four separate chapters you can play, one for each of the factions, I actually quite preferred to play the Free Play mode much more, as it wasn’t as strict on objectives and winning guidelines. There’s also a guide that can be referenced at any time should you need, though it’s a lot of information to sift through so make sure you pay attention and take it in. The collection of tutorials will take you a little under and hour, but they are well done and I was able to start my adventure and trading quite smoothly from that point on. These are broken up into bite-sized pieces, each one teaching you a small portion of Port Royale 4’s unique gameplay which you then piece all together for the whole experience. There’s no stats for your chosen character, but they too have different playstyles for example, I wanted to focus on trading, so the Merchant was an obvious choice, as they don’t require a costly trade license at each city.īefore delving right into the Campaign or Free Play, I highly suggest going through the dozen or so tutorial missions. You’re also unable to edit how your character looks as well, though this doesn’t really matter in the long run since you don’t really have any interactions with other players or characters in any meaningful way. Do you want to be a Merchant that focuses on trading alone, a Buccaneer, an Explorer or maybe be a ruthless Pirate and plunder what you can? You'll get to choose your own flag, though there’s only a handful of options for icon and colors which was a bit of a letdown. Once you choose your faction you’ll then select the character you want, essentially a class. Each faction has its own strengths, weaknesses and playstyles, so make sure to try out each one to see what you prefer, but be aware you’re unable to change your faction once a decision has been made. While there’s no story or narrative in the traditional sense, you’re simply tasked with amassing a wealth and fulfilling certain objectives your Viceroy appoints to you. Taking place during the 17th century, you’ll choose from one of the colonial powers of France, Spain, England or Netherlands as they try and compete for control over the seas and lands of the Caribbean. Once I accepted this and learned its intricacies, I started to enjoy my time with it much more, trying to amass my wealth to epic proportions and become a prosperous trading city hub. I initially expected Port Royale 4 to be a game about sailing the open seas, swashbuckling and full of pirates, and while it has those elements, it’s much more focused on the sailing and the trading aspect of the times more than anything else. I’m happy to report that this isn’t the case with Port Royale 4, as the control scheme works well, is logical and eventually becomes second nature with a little practice. Some games have a problem transitioning from the standard keyboard and mouse controls and mapping those to a controller with limited inputs. A completely unique and interesting game, Port Royale 4, and the previous entries in the series, has never been on console before, and sometimes a PC port to console isn’t always as smooth as it could be. I’ll get this out of the way first I’ve never played a Port Royale game before, so needless to say I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I started its inaugural voyage on Xbox One with Port Royale 4. Each character has their own set of cards, and you’ll need to find a good balance between the two. One big difference from Slay the Spire is that instead of picking one character, you’ll pick two. Most cards have gem slots, and gems can add various effects to what a card already does, like grant block, power, or additional damage.Īt least the shop is kind enough to have cards for both characters in your party. The other thing you’ll earn along the way are gems. You’ll also be able to buy cards at the beginning from a shop, which also sells relics that either affect one character, or the party as a whole. Cards gathered from the boxes will run you twenty-five gold, which isn’t horrible as you can find gold from battles, or just on uncovered tiles. Unlike most other games though, cards aren’t ever free to earn. While the battles won’t grant cards, there are boxes around the map that will. There are also ink pots for your main pot that can make it uncovers a circle where you pick instead of just around your character, or just expands the circle. There are some that uncover a line of three to four tiles in front or front and back, as well as ones that can just uncover one tile at a time. You’ll be given five ink pots at the start that uncover a batch of tiles around you, and winning battles can unlock different kinds of ink pots. There is also a strip of tiles that go from where you start to where the boss of the chapter is, usually with a couple battles in between. A set amount of tiles will start uncovered already, usually displaying either towers that can open more tiles for free, or various battles around the pages. Essentially, each page of the storybook you need to progress through is tile based. Let’s start with the basic concept of how Roguebook works. |
